How to Authenticate a Bottega Veneta Cassette Bag: 9 Checks

How to Authenticate a Bottega Veneta Cassette Bag: 9 Checks (2026)
Most It bags announce themselves. The Cassette does the opposite — and that is why it is copied so aggressively. When former creative director Daniel Lee debuted the Cassette as part of Bottega Veneta's pre-fall 2019 collection, he took the house's signature Intrecciato woven leather, blew it up to an oversized maxi scale, and set it into a boxy, rectangular front-flap bag named for that rectangular shape. There are no logos or motifs on the outside to compare fonts against; the recognisable oversized weave itself is the branding. One season later Lee sent out the sister style everyone now photographs — the Padded Cassette, with puffed, pillowy woven leather and a distinct triangular buckle — and the family has since multiplied into flat, padded, small, mini, candy and chain versions that share a name while differing in size, strap and interior. Copies get the rectangle right in a listing photo. In the hand they fail where the real bag spends its money: a double-faced maxi weave that must lie flat and even, lambskin that must feel buttery rather than plasticky, matte sanded hardware with a rounded-top triangle, and a small paper-like serial tag hidden inside. This guide runs the nine checks in the order authenticators use them. Bottega readers should start it beside our Bottega Veneta Jodie guide: the Jodie is the house's other Lee-era weave carrier, and the two bags share Intrecciato logic while differing completely in architecture. Quick note: no single check proves a bag is real. Authenticators weigh all nine together — and against the variant, size, leather and production year the bag claims to be. A detail that is correct for a flat Cassette can be wrong for a Padded Cassette, and the reverse is also true.
Short answer
An authentic Bottega Veneta Cassette is a logo-free rectangular flap crossbody in double-faced Maxi Intrecciato woven leather, closed by a magnetic flap and carried on an adjustable strap with a triangular buckle. Daniel Lee debuted the flat Cassette for pre-fall 2019 and the puffed Padded Cassette the following season; the documented full-size Padded Cassette measures about 26 × 18 × 8 cm (W × H × D) in 100% lambskin with an unlined interior, one inside zipper pocket and gold-finish hardware, while the flat family and the downsized lines measure smaller — a documented Small Padded Cassette at 7.5 × 4.75 × 3 in with a 20.5 in drop and the tiny Cassette mini at 12 × 9 × 4.5 cm with a 135 cm strap — so dimensions only judge a bag inside its claimed variant. The weave is orthogonal maxi Intrecciato held by compression, never stitched along its edges: strips uniform in width, evenly tensioned, lying flat (plump and controlled on padded versions, never bubble-like or stuck together), with small natural spaces between nappa strips on the flap and a narrower gold magnet on the genuine flap. Leather is butter-soft lambskin/nappa that warms to the hand; hardware is matte, sanded metal — closure triangle with a distinguished rounded top, buckle thicker and wider, tilted deeply engraved lettering — and the interior zipper is a quality Riri unit. Inside, branding is a delicate blind deboss, and identity sits on a narrow paper-like tag (about 1.5 × 0.5 in, logo and MADE IN ITALY on one face, ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED with the code on the reverse, raw unfinished edges) sewn into lining or pocket. Fakes fail on bubbled or glued weave, shiny thin hardware with wrong triangle geometry, stitched weave edges, bold pocket lettering, and serial fonts offered as standalone proof.
1. Model, Silhouette, and Size — Name the Variant Before You Measure
Start by confirming the bag in front of you is the variant and size it claims to be, because "Cassette" is a family, not a single bag:
- Fix the silhouette first. The Cassette is a boxy rectangular front-flap crossbody: a compact body big enough for essentials, a flap top, an adjustable strap for shoulder or cross-body wear, and no exterior logo or motif anywhere. Retail descriptions repeat the same architecture across the family — flap top with magnetic closure, adjustable shoulder strap, one main compartment — and the name itself comes from the rectangular shape. A "Cassette" with outside branding, a rounded hobo body, or a tote architecture is failing the design before leather is touched, the same first filter the Bottega Veneta Jodie guide applies to its own logo-free body.
- Know the generations before you measure. The documented sequence is: flat Cassette (pre-fall 2019 debut, oversized maxi weave) → Padded Cassette (following season, puffed pillowy weave, triangular buckle, initially one size) → downsized and hardware variants, including Small Padded, Mini/Candy-scale minis, and chain-strap Chain/Padded Chain versions with a chunky chain handle. Japanese and Western resale listings add further size names, and Bottega has renamed and re-cut small sizes over time — so size names mislead across seasons exactly as they do on the Jodie. Authenticate against the claimed variant first, dimensions second.
- Measure the base and write the numbers down. The best-documented anchor is the full-size Padded Cassette: 26 (W) × 18 (H) × 8 (D) cm, 100% lambskin, unlined with one zipper pocket in a specialist retailer's full specification, corroborated by a detailed editorial teardown giving 10.2 (W) × 7 (H) × 3.1 (D) in for the same one-size padded bag — the two agree within tape-position tolerance. Below it, a certified Small Padded Cassette measures 7.5 (base) × 4.75 (H) × 3 (W) in, drop 20.5 in, with an adjustable strap and large gold triangle buckle; the miniature Cassette mini measures 12 (W) × 9 (H) × 4.5 (D) cm, strap 135 cm, drop 63 cm, with one main compartment and one internal card slot rather than a zip pocket. Treat those as variant ladders, not one ladder: a 12 cm mini and a 26 cm padded bag are both "Cassettes," and a bag matching no documented size in any variant is telling its own story.
- Place the bag in time. Anything claiming to be a Cassette produced before the pre-fall 2019 debut is impossible on its face, just as a Book Tote claiming a pre-2018 date fails in the Dior Book Tote guide. Within the family, a padded pillow construction dated to the first flat season — or a chain-strap configuration sold as a first-season flat Cassette — contradicts its own claimed year before any tag is read.
2. The Maxi Intrecciato Weave: Orthogonal, Double-Faced, Held by Compression
This is the brand mark — treat it like one, because on a logo-free bag the weave is the logo:
- Confirm the pattern family. The Cassette uses an exaggerated, oversized version of Intrecciato — described by retailers as double-faced maxi weave with an orthogonal pattern, the same finish inside and out. "Double-faced" matters: since the Daniel Lee era the leather is double-sided so the exterior mirrors the interior, and the genuine panel reads as one continuous textile rather than a woven front glued to a separate lining. A small-scale classic Intrecciato grid, a printed weave texture, or a woven face that stops at the flap edge and gives way to unrelated fabric fails here.
- Test how the strips are held. On a genuine Bottega Veneta bag the woven strips are pressed and held by compression, with no thread running along the weave edges — the sides of the strips are pressed into place, never stitched into position. Visible stitching holding strips together is the single fastest replica elimination in the specialist literature, repeated independently by hands-on authenticators. Run a fingertip and a loupe along strip edges, corners and the flap fold: cleanly cut, finished strip edges with no fraying, no glue crust and no edge thread support the bag; stitched, frayed or glue-hidden edges fail it even when the rectangle photographs correctly — the same compression discipline the Bottega Veneta Jodie guide and the Loewe Puzzle Bag guide apply to their own woven and pieced constructions.
- Read flatness against variant. The authentic flat Cassette weave sits flat and even; the authentic Padded Cassette weave is plump and controlled — wider, puffier strips with even tension, never lumpy. Dedicated real-vs-fake comparison makes the replica direction explicit: the fake surface looks more bubble-like, while the original orthogonal weave looks flatter, and on the flap the genuine nappa strips show small spaces between strips where fakes look stuck to one another. Inconsistent strip widths, wandering tension, gaps where strips do not lie flat, or bunching and misalignment where the weave wraps a corner are the documented fake pattern across every professional checklist — judge the claimed variant's flatness, not a generic puffiness.
- Check corners, seams and transitions as one pass. Authentic weaving wraps corners cleanly with strips tucked and finished neatly, and the transitions between sections are so neat they look seamless; on replicas those transitions are hard not to see. Colour must be even across the panel with no patchiness between strip surface and underside. A weave that is tidy in the centre of the flap but wanders, lifts or changes width at the edges and gussets has failed where copies always fail first.
3. Leather: Lambskin Hand, Weight, and Smell
The weave is only half the material story; the skin it is cut from is the other half:
- Expect the documented material and judge the claimed variant. The Padded Cassette is specified as 100% lambskin leather by both editorial and specialist retail sources, with the leather versions praised as buttery soft and supple with a slight sheen; the broader Cassette family also appears in calfskin/canvas/suede and nylon fabrications by season, so a leather name that belongs to no Bottega vocabulary for the claimed variant — or a "lambskin" with a plastic shine and no depth — fails before hardware is touched. Suede versions are documented as covetable alternatives, not as a licence for any suede-like fabric to pass as leather.
- Judge the leather in the hand, not the listing. Genuine strips are thin, supple and flow with a smooth drape: the weave moves naturally, feels supple and dense at once, and warms to the hand within seconds rather than staying cool and slick. The documented replica direction is the opposite in both directions — thicker, bulkier or stiffer leather that makes the pattern look clumsy and bubbled, or thin papery skin that scratches and tears easily. Real BV bags also carry a reassuring heft from full leather panels and dense weave; a suspiciously light, hollow feel points to thin leather or synthetic backing. On padded lines the lambskin should feel pillowy but never flimsy.
- Use smell as a supporting check, never a verdict. Authentic hide smells rich and clean, of real leather and develops a natural patina; fakes give off a chemical or plastic odour that airing does not remove, often paired with a plasticky shine and board-like hand. A strong chemical smell combined with light weight and a wandering weave is the walk-away combination in professional checklists — any one of them alone is a warning, together they close the question.
- Read wear honestly. Light corner rubbing, faint interior imprints and soft creasing at the flap fold are honest wear on a carried lambskin bag and must be priced as wear, not read as forgery. What wear cannot explain is structural: peeling top layers at the buckle, cracked edge coating exposing backing, or strips lifting from the panel. Distinguish carried from copied by whether weave tension (Check 2), hardware finish (Check 5) and interior furniture (Checks 7–8) still agree.
4. The Flap and the Magnetic Closure
Lift the flap and work the closure repeatedly — on this bag the magnet and its housing are finished to a standard copies do not match:
- Work the closure as an owner would. The documented closure across the family is a front flap with magnetic closure (magnetic snap under the flap; on Small Padded examples described as opening with a push lock to the interior). It should engage with a clean, confident pull, seat the flap evenly over the rectangular body without skew, and release without grit, forcing or looseness. PurseBlog's hands-on note is the honest owner's caveat: the padded bag's magnetic closure can be a touch tricky to operate yet succeeds at keeping the bag closed — firm is correct, weak, drifting or misaligned is not. A flap that only sits correctly when the bag is stuffed, or a magnet that barely holds an empty bag shut, is failing the mechanism.
- Magnify the magnet itself. In side-by-side authentication photography the gold magnet is narrower on the authentic bag; the replica magnet runs wider. Read width with flap geometry together: a correct narrow magnet centred under a flap whose weave strips keep their small natural spaces (Check 2) supports the bag, while a wide magnet under strips that look stuck together repeats the replica direction in two places at once. Finish must match the hardware family of Check 5 — no bright, thin plating flaking where thumbs work the flap daily.
- Read the flap as woven structure, not a lid. The flap is a continuation of the double-faced maxi weave with the same finishes inside and out; its underside should show the same discipline as its face, not a cheaper backing. Because the strap can be stored inside so the bag can be carried as a clutch, the flap and mouth must also sit correctly empty and unstrapped. A flap whose weave changes scale, whose underside is unrelated material, or whose edges show the glue and bunching of Check 2 has already failed before the buckle is examined — the flap counterpart to the partition test in the Fendi Peekaboo Bag guide.
5. The Triangular Buckle and Closure Hardware: Matte, Sanded, Rounded on Top
The triangle is the Cassette's only hardware signature — copies spend on its shine and get its geometry wrong:
- Read finish before shape. The authentic closure is made of matte, sanded metal; the fake closure is not as sanded and looks shinier. The buckle repeats the same split: the original buckle is sanded and matte, whereas the replica is super shiny. That matte, slightly tarnished or brushed character is the house-wide hardware language — current BV hardware is described independently as simple, sanded and matte (or with a tarnish-like vintage homage), with considerable weight — so a mirror-bright, lightweight triangle contradicts both the model-specific comparison and the brand-wide standard. Plating must be even with no bubbling, flaking or mixed metal tones across closure, buckle and strap fittings.
- Measure the triangle geometry. On the closure, the authentic triangle has a distinguished, rounded top; the fake triangle does not replicate the anticipated look at the top. On the strap buckle, the authentic piece is thicker and wider, whereas the fake is thinner and narrower but longer in height. Photograph closure and buckle straight-on and in profile: correct matte finish over correct thick, wide, rounded-top geometry supports the weave verdict, while shiny thin metal with an elongated narrow buckle is two hardware failures in the same direction — the same engraving-and-geometry discipline the Chanel Boy Bag guide and the Saint Laurent Manhattan guide apply to their own closures.
- Read the lettering on the metal. Authentic hardware lettering is tilted and nicely (deeply) engraved, with a vintage character that sits well with the brand; replica lettering runs narrower, smaller, in totally different shapes and colours — in the font comparison, fake letters appear black, differently shaped and tilted to the opposite side. The triangle buckles also display the brand's logo engraved along the side on authentic examples. Any branded buckle or stamp must be clean and evenly struck with crisp, correctly spaced engraving cut to consistent depth; shallow, uneven, misspaced or colour-filled lettering is the giveaway, and bubbling or flaking around it deserves the same suspicion it earns in the Hermès Kelly Bag guide.
- Weigh the hardware in the hand. Authentic BV hardware is sturdy, heavy and substantial with a smooth, subtle finish; flimsy or lightweight metal is a documented fake tell. That heft must agree across the bag — a heavy triangle over hollow strap fittings or a tinny chain (Check 6) describes an assembled bag, not a manufactured one.
6. The Strap — and the Chain on Chain Versions
Work the strap through its full adjustment, then take it off — both configurations are part of the design:
- Confirm the standard carry. The family standard is an adjustable leather shoulder strap for shoulder or cross-body wear (adjustable canvas/lambskin or tubular straps on specified variants), anchored through the triangular buckle system of Check 5. Documented drops frame the proportions: 20.5 in on the certified Small Padded Cassette, 63 cm (with 135 cm strap length) on the Cassette mini, and editorial handling confirms the padded bag's strap adjusts for crossbody or shoulder carry. Strap leather, weave scale, stitching and edge finish must match the body story; a replacement-feeling strap in unrelated leather, or adjustment holes/sliders that chew the leather, fail here even when the body photographs well.
- Test the clutch conversion. On the padded bag the adjustable strap can be tucked/stored inside so the bag can be worn as a clutch, a versatility point repeated by editorial, retail and hands-on sources. The bag must sit, close and carry correctly in that configuration, with interior capacity honestly reduced by the stored strap and padded walls — the interior is smaller than the exterior suggests because the padding takes the volume. A bag that cannot be carried strapless without the flap gaping or the body distorting is not demonstrating the documented design.
- Give chain versions their own pass. Chain Cassette and Padded Chain Cassette variants replace or supplement the leather strap with a chunky chain top handle/strap. The professional rule is simple: the chain should be solid, not hollow, solid and evenly finished with closures engaging cleanly, and model notes single out padding evenness and boxy proportions alongside it. Lift the chain: reassuring weight, uniform links and even plating support the bag; light, hollow, rough or unevenly plated links repeat the hardware failure of Check 5 at larger scale. Do not judge a leather-strap Cassette by chain criteria, or a Chain Cassette by leather-strap drop tables — variant first, as in Check 1 and in the strap logic of the Goyard Saint Louis Tote guide.
- Inspect attachments under load. Shoulder-strap anchor points, buckle bars and handle attachments are stress areas where fakes cut corners. Reinforced, even stitching and unfrayed, uncracked leather around them are essential; stretching, cracking, glue residue or lifting at an attachment is structural, while cosmetic darkening at a grip is honest wear — the same distinction the Prada Galleria Bag guide draws on its own handle attachments.
7. Interior: Unlined Finish, Zip Pocket, and the Riri Zipper
Open the bag. On a Cassette the inside is woven leather too, so it is finished — and authenticated — like an exterior:
- Confirm the layout for the claimed variant. The full-size Padded Cassette is specified as an unlined interior with the same finishes inside and out and one inside zipper pocket; hands-on and retail descriptions agree on the zipped/zipper pocket inside the main compartment (and a flap magnetic closure over it). Downsized minis substitute one internal card slot for the zip pocket, and certified Small Padded examples specify a matching leather interior with a zipper pocket. A single cavernous fabric-lined cavity, a fitted organizer substituting for the documented pocket, or a zip-pocket claim on a mini whose specification is a card slot fails against its own claimed variant — judge the bag against its generation's specification, exactly as the Louis Vuitton Neverfull guide judges interiors against season.
- Work the interior zipper to its underside. Bottega Veneta's quality zipper is the Riri unit — professional guides note BV bags frequently use high-end Riri zippers (with Lampo also cited), identifiable by the maker's mark on the pull or underside of the slider, sometimes with a butterfly mark, and by a smooth, buttery glide with no snagging. In the Cassette-specific pocket comparison, the original zipper shows rubber stripes on both sides, while the replica zipper is stitched straight to the leather. Read those together: a correctly marked, smooth Riri pull with the documented pocket construction supports the bag; an unbranded, stiff, catchy zipper stitched directly to the pocket leather contradicts it. Absence of a visible mark alone does not condemn a variant — not every model and era marks identically — but a present mark must be correctly stamped and crisp.
- Read the pocket lettering and seams. On the authentic pocket the letters blend in well with the background; on the replica they are super bold in different fonts. Interior seams must be as clean as exterior seams: tight, uniform stitching, thread colour matched to the leather, seams aligned precisely where weave meets seam, with no loose threads, fraying or glue residue beside stitching — glue next to stitching is an immediate red flag in hands-on practice. Because padded walls compress the interior, also judge capacity honestly: a padded bag that promises flat-bag volume is misdescribed before it is inauthentic.
- Check interior material against the exterior claim. Double-sided leather means the interior should feel like the exterior's continuation — supple nappa/calfskin by variant, fitted neatly with clean joins. A warm, cheap-feeling synthetic lining under an unlined/double-faced claim fails here even when the front photographs well, the interior counterpart to the exterior test in the Dior Saddle Bag guide.
8. Heat Stamp, Font, and the Paper-Like Serial Tag
The identity marks close the case; they never open it — and on Bottega they are deliberately quiet:
- Find the heat stamp first. Separate from the serial flag, Bottega uses a blind-embossed (debossed) mark reading BOTTEGA VENETA with MADE IN ITALY below it on leather or suede — on the Cassette, blind embossed inside the bag. The Made in Italy line appears in a thinner, smaller font below the brand name, and the debossing is delicate, almost blending into the material — never a sharp, printed-looking stamp. The font is consistent: capital letters with even spacing and serif details. A loud or oversized external logo contradicts the house's no-logo identity outright; blurry, sloppy, printed-looking or wrongly weighted interior lettering (including a malformed G whose horizontal stroke disappears) is the documented fake direction. Genuine bags are labelled Made in Italy — a leather handbag labelled with any non-Italy origin is a strong fake indicator.
- Then find the serial flag where the era puts it. From the 2000s to now each bag carries a narrow, paper-like fabric tag, about 1.5 × 0.5 in, typically white or cream with raw, unfinished edges, sewn into the lining or into a pocket (often inside a zip pocket or compartment seam, sometimes hard to find). One face is printed with the Bottega Veneta logo with MADE IN ITALY underneath; the reverse carries ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED over the serial/code lines in a clear block font. Era matters: pre-2012 tags used two lines (style/leather/colour, then EPEV with year and lot), while around 2010–2012 the format moved to a single-line code whose full meaning the house keeps undisclosed (blue printing predating black as a rough era clue); Lee-era tags carry a unique serial with the same raw, sometimes frayed edge. A Cassette (2019 onward) must therefore show the modern single-line system — demanding a pre-2012 two-line reading from it manufactures a false fail, and accepting a two-line vintage format on a claimed 2019 bag manufactures a false pass.
- Read tag typography and sewing as one check. Genuine tags use clean, correctly weighted type with no wobble or blur, and the tag is sewn straight, tight and square to its edges. A tag sewn crooked with loose or uneven stitches, sloppy spacing or wrong capitalisation is the classic fake tell, repeated across professional checklists. The Made in Italy marker on the tag must sit correctly for the bag's era and agree with the heat stamp of the first bullet — two Italian claims in two different fonts and places must still tell one story, the agreement test the Celine Triomphe Bag guide and the Balenciaga City Bag guide apply to their own interior marks.
- Apply the serial rule without exception. The code identifies the piece rather than dating it on its own, and professional authenticators are explicit: counterfeiters replicate the serial flag, the heat stamp and even cards, so a correct-looking number means little in isolation and a missing card proves nothing (pre-owned bags legitimately lose cards; tiny accessories are seeing the flag phased out, though a modern Cassette should carry one). A serial lookup can disqualify — wrong era format, impossible variant, tag contradicting weave and hardware — it cannot confer authenticity, which is why this check is last.
9. Stitching, Edges, and What Should Accompany the Bag
Finish where manufacture cannot hide: the seams that hold the weave, and the set the bag travels with:
- Read stitching as structure. Beyond the compression-held weave itself (Check 2), every constructed seam — strap, pocket, lining joins, attachment reinforcements — must show tight, uniform stitching with no loose threads or frayed seams, thread matched to leather, and transitions between sections that look seamless. On the genuine Padded Cassette that neatness is what makes the bag read as one pillow; on fakes the section transitions are visibly hard, the top layer at the buckle looks ready to peel, and hurried joins appear exactly where hands-on guides tell you to look. Minor variation on early hand-finished vintage Bottega is normal and irrelevant here: a 2019-onward Cassette is judged by modern production discipline, as in the Saint Laurent Loulou guide.
- Inspect edges, corners and painted finishes. Strip edges must be cleanly cut with finished edges; corners must wrap without bunching, misalignment or adhesive smears; any painted edge or trim must be smooth, evenly applied and free of cracks or drips. Colour saturation must be even and deep with no blotchy patches. Light corner rubbing and faint resin/edge wear noted on certified pre-owned examples are condition, priced as condition; frayed strips, glue-crusted corners and cracking edge paint over synthetic backing are manufacture, judged as forgery.
- Weigh the accompanying items correctly. Documented Cassette sets vary by season and retailer — certified and retail examples are recorded with combinations of dust bag, care booklet/cards and (on chain versions) mini dust bag and tag — so treat the full set as corroboration only. Dust-bag lettering, where present, must agree in font and era with the interior marks of Check 8; a missing booklet never condemns an honestly used bag and a perfect card never saves a bag whose weave, triangle and tag fail. For a high-value purchase, use a professional authentication service and photograph, in order: flap weave and magnet, closure triangle profile and top, strap buckle front and side engraving, strap attachments under load, interior pocket and zipper underside, heat stamp, and both faces of the serial tag. A seller who refuses that photo set is telling you something — the closing rule of the Gucci Marmont Bag guide and of every guide in this series.

FAQ
When was the Bottega Veneta Cassette introduced, and who designed it? Daniel Lee, then creative director, debuted the Cassette for the pre-fall 2019 collection — a rectangular front-flap bag in oversized (maxi) Intrecciato with no exterior logo. The puffed Padded Cassette followed the next season, adding the pillowy padded weave and triangular buckle; small, mini/candy and chain versions came later, which is why variant and date must be authenticated together.
What sizes does the Cassette come in? By variant, not on one ladder. The documented full-size Padded Cassette is about 26 × 18 × 8 cm; a certified Small Padded Cassette measures 7.5 × 4.75 × 3 in with a 20.5 in drop; the Cassette mini measures 12 × 9 × 4.5 cm with a 135 cm strap. Published centimetres vary by variant, season and tape position, and small-size names have been re-cut over time — measure the bag and judge it inside its claimed variant.
How do I check the Cassette weave quickly? Look for thread. Genuine Intrecciato strips are pressed and held by compression with no stitching along the weave edges, uniform in width and evenly tensioned — flat on the flat Cassette, plump and controlled (never bubble-like) on the Padded Cassette, with small natural spaces between flap strips. Visible edge stitching, stuck-together or wandering strips, and glue at the corners are the fastest replica tells.
Where is the serial number on a Cassette, and what does it tell me? On a narrow paper-like interior tag (about 1.5 × 0.5 in, raw edges) sewn into the lining or a pocket: logo with MADE IN ITALY on one face, ORIGINALITY CERTIFIED with the code on the reverse. A 2019-onward Cassette carries the modern single-line system. The code identifies the piece and can disqualify an era- or variant-mismatched bag, but counterfeiters copy tags and numbers — it never authenticates alone.
Does a Cassette come with a dust bag and cards? Verified retail and certified pre-owned examples are documented with combinations of dust bag, care booklet/cards and, on chain versions, tag and mini dust bag, varying by season and retailer. Treat the set as corroboration only: a missing booklet never condemns an honestly used bag, and a perfect card never saves a bag whose weave, triangle hardware and serial tag fail.
Bottom line
Authenticating a Cassette is a weave-first exercise: rectangular variant and size ladder first, then an orthogonal double-faced maxi weave held by compression that must lie flat (or plump and controlled), butter-soft lambskin with real heft, a narrower flap magnet, matte sanded triangular hardware with a rounded top and tilted deep engraving, a storable adjustable strap (solid chain where fitted), an unlined same-finish interior with a Riri-zippered pocket, and a delicate blind stamp over a paper-like serial tag that can disqualify but never confer. One failed check is a warning; two or more is a walk-away.
